Paper Abstract:      The aim of the study described herein was to (a) assess the effect of using three different pedagogical approaches to teaching ‘sight words’ on students’ recognition, spelling, and comprehension of English words in an elementary school in Taiwan, and (b) compare the overall effectiveness of these different strategies for teaching English. The participants in the study were fifth-grade students from three different classes in an elementary school. After the experiment, these students all took part in testing. The results of the tests showed that the use of ‘sight words’ can help elementary school students to recognise, spell, and comprehend English words when reading. We suggest that the effectiveness of the scheme could be increased if the ‘sight words’ approach were used in conjunction with a ‘look and say approach’ technique for low-achieving groups of students and by means of ‘learning vocabulary through reading’ for high-achieving groups.
